Ohio Pharmacists Association
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Bloodborne Pathogens standard was revised by the Needlestick Safety and Prevention Act of 2000 to require the use of safer medical devices and to maintain an exposure control plan. Personnel who have the potential to be exposed to a bloodborne pathogen must meet the requirements of this standard, including annual live training, or risk facing fines. This includes pharmacists and others who administer immunizations, provide point-of-care testing involving blood or who are involved with handling sharps containers. OPA is offering a webinar format for pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and other employees to comply with this OSHA standard. The speaker will discuss potential bloodborne hazards, safer practices designed to reduce/avoid sharps injuries, and effective post-exposure procedures. This program will provide the opportunity for interactive questions.
1. Identify potential bloodborne pathogens and their mode of transmission
2. Describe the hepatitis B vaccination requirements for at-risk health care workers
3. Identify the key components of an exposure control plan
4. Describe the engineering controls and work flow practices to minimize the risk of exposure
5. Outline the appropriate post-exposure response
6. Discuss record keeping requirements
This knowledge-based activity is targeted to pharmacists and technicians in all practice settings.
The Ohio Pharmacists Foundation Inc. is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education. The Ohio Pharmacists Foundation will provide 1.0 contact hour (0.1 CEU) of continuing pharmacy education credit for pharmacists and technicians who complete the webinar and the evaluation.
